LONDON, England — The UK drugmaker Pfizer has signed an agreement with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to allow the drugmaker to sell its version of Viagra, called the generic equivalent of the drug, the first of its kind, in the United States.
The deal, which was announced Tuesday by the FDA, is the latest in a string of new drug approvals for Viagra.
Viagra is the first of its kind, and the FDA has approved it for use in treating erectile dysfunction.
In a separate transaction, the USFDA reached a licensing agreement with Cipla, which owns Viagra, which in the US is also approved for treating erectile dysfunction.
Cipla is also allowed to sell the drug.
The deal marks Pfizer's first time taking such an agreement with the FDA, said John Berczi, a Pfizer spokesman.
The company also said it would allow Pfizer to begin marketing the generic version in December. It's not yet clear how much of the sales will be in the United States, but analysts say that's likely.
Viagra is a well-known treatment for erectile dysfunction, and Pfizer's patent for the drug extends for a number of years to the manufacture and distribution of that treatment.
According to a Pfizer spokesperson, "we believe the U. S. patent on Viagra will allow Pfizer to manufacture and market its generic equivalent in the U. This would allow the company to continue to manufacture and sell our patented generic."
The company also said it will "provide Pfizer with additional information about the potential for the generic Viagra to be marketed in the United States by Cipla."
Cipla is still not expected to make a new drug application until early 2016, and Pfizer remains in discussions with the FDA about potential licensing.

The company also said it was in discussions with the FDA about possible licensing agreements with Cipla, and "we are also exploring options with the FDA to allow Pfizer to launch its generic Viagra in the United States by the end of the year."
The company said it would be filing a new application for Viagra in the United States in early December. The company's application would be based on data from the company and the FDA.
Pfizer previously submitted an application for the generic version of Viagra in 2013.
In September 2016, Pfizer filed an application for an FDA-approved generic version of the drug, but the application was rejected because Pfizer had not submitted enough data.

Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.

“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

Results:Data from 3030 HIV-positive patients with a BMI of more than 30 kg/m2 or less than 35 kg/m2 were analyzed.
Conclusions:The prevalence of the HIV-positive group was significantly higher than that of the HIV-negative group (10.7% vs. 7.1%; p<0.001). The results of our study suggest that there may be a need to consider more effective pharmacological treatments for the prevention of HIV and AIDS. We also found that the incidence of the HIV-positive group was significantly higher than that of the HIV-negative group.
